Connecting insights, shaping futures

The Royal United Services Institute Queensland (RUSIQ) is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation dedicated to informed, non-partisan discussion on defence and national security. Our aim is to promote informed debate and improve public awareness and understanding of Australia’s defence and national security environment.

Embracing our history

Founded in Brisbane in 1892 under the presidency of Major General John Fletcher Owen, then Commandant of the Queensland Defence Force, RUSIQ has more than a century of history supporting the professional education of service members and the wider defence community. From its earliest days, the Institute has focused on the study of strategy, military history and defence policy as a way to strengthen Australia’s security and resilience.

Today, the Royal United Services Institute Queensland is a constituent body of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies – Australia, a federation of independent state and territory institutes working together to deepen understanding of defence and security issues nationwide.

What we do

RUSIQ provides a forum where serving and former ADF members, public servants, academics, industry professionals and engaged citizens can come together to explore contemporary and emerging security challenges. We do this through:

  • Public lectures, seminars and briefings with senior military leaders, practitioners and subject-matter experts.
  • A specialist library of around 8,000 volumes and other resources focused on military history, strategy, defence and national security, available to members for research and study.
  • Access to national-level analysis and commentary through RUSI publications, including the United Service journal.
  • Our work is grounded in respect for history, but firmly focused on the policy, capability and strategic choices facing Australia today.

Memberships

Membership is open to all persons aged 18 years and over who are interested in the defence and security of Australia and who support the aims of the Institute.

As a member, you can:

  • Stay informed through regular talks, seminars and events.
  • Connect with a diverse community of people engaged in defence and national security.
  • Access our specialised library and selected RUSI publications.
  • Support an independent, Queensland-based forum for serious, balanced discussion on security issues.

Get involved

Whether you are serving or former military, part of the broader national security community, a student, or simply an interested citizen, the Royal United Services Institute Queensland offers a welcoming space to learn, question and contribute.

PARTNERSHIPS

Thanks to our sponsors & supporters

Our memberships are priced to remain accessible while delivering clear value to our members. We could not, however, fulfil our mission without the support of our sponsors, who contribute their time, expertise and resources to ensure RUSIQ can sustain a high-quality program of independent forums, events and public discussion across Queensland.
