The Royal United Services Institute of Queensland congratulates the senior leaders of the Australian Defence Force on their forthcoming appointments, announced by the Australian Government and subject to approval by Her Excellency the Governor-General. These changes, to take effect from July 2026, reflect both continuity of experience and the ongoing evolution of Australia’s defence leadership at a critical time for national security.
Vice Admiral Mark Hammond AO RAN has been appointed as the next Chief of the Defence Force. With a distinguished 40-year career spanning surface and submarine commands, and most recently as Chief of Navy since 2022, Vice Admiral Hammond brings deep operational and strategic experience. His leadership will be particularly significant as Australia advances the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine program and continues the development of the future fleet.

Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley AM CSC RAN will be appointed Chief of Navy. A career submariner, including command of HMAS Collins and leadership of the Submarine Force, Rear Admiral Buckley has also played a central role in the development of Australia’s nuclear submarine capability. His experience positions him well to lead the Navy through a period of significant transition and capability uplift.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle AM CSC DSM will be appointed Chief of Army, becoming the first woman to command the Australian Army. Having served across tactical, operational, and strategic levels—including roles such as Commander Forces Command and Head Information Warfare—Lieutenant General Coyle brings a breadth of experience suited to guiding Army through ongoing reforms following the 2024 National Defence Strategy.
RUSI Queensland also acknowledges the exceptional service of Admiral David Johnston AC RAN and Lieutenant General Simon Stuart AO DSC. Their longstanding contributions to the ADF, and to Australia’s security, have left a lasting mark on the institution and those who have served under them.
